Delano, a photographer, filmmaker, and composer, was born Yakov Ovcharov to a Jewish family in what is now Ukraine in 1914. With his parents and younger brother, he emigrated to the United States in 1923. The family arrived in New York on July 5, 1923, and soon after settled in Philadelphia. He worked for the Works Progress Administration, United Fund, and Farm Security Administration (FSA) before moving to Puerto Rico where he spent much of his life. He was known as a composer that used Puerto Rican folk material. He died in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1997 at the age of 83.
